Emergency |
A 24 hour cooling center will be available
at La Grange Memorial Hospital, 5101 Gilbert Ave. |
For more information contact the Police
Department non-emergency number at 579-2334. |
| Tornado |
The Village Emergency Management Agency
will direct the sirens to be sounded if the Village
is threatened by a reported tornado. Residents should
be alert when severe weather threatens, as tornadoes
can form without warning. |
To report a tornado or funnel cloud, call
the La Grange Police.
During severe weather, residents are asked to refrain
from calling 9-1-1 for information, and should monitor
local television or radio, or the National Weather Service
radio system. |
| Winter Storm |
Winter Storms can make driving difficult,
cause power outages, and delay emergency responses.
Residents are urged to consider these possibilities
in preparing for any winter storm.
Information on snow plowing is available of the FAQ
page. |
For general Winter Storm safety information,
contact the Fire Department at 579-2338.
For snow removal information, contact the DPW at 579-2328.
For additional winter storm information on the Internet,
try the winter storm page of the Chicago
Office of the National Weather Service |
| Flooding |
Local flooding is most often the result
of sudden, torrential downpours. This type of flooding
overwhelms the sewer system and results in street and
basement flooding.
Residents are reminded that flooded areas can hide hazards
- electrical lines, open manholes, and health hazards
of contaminated water. Flooded basements can result
in electrical hazards and extinguished pilot lights
on appliances. |
For assistance with a flooded basement
contact the Fire Department and the Department of Public
Works.
If you are concerned over electrical or gas hazards,
always dial 9-1-1.
Do not enter a flooded basement where electrical equipment
may be under water.

Other Information:
Disaster Information
In the event of a Village-wide disaster, this web site may
be replaced with a special disaster web to provide information
to residents. In addition, information will be broadcast
of cable TV and local radio stations. If you have questions
about assistance of a non-emergency
nature, call the Village at 579-2300.
Emergencies, Reporting
All emergencies should be reported to the Village Telecommunications
and dispatch center by dialing 9-1-1.
Emergency Shelter
In cases where emergency shelter may be necessary (power
outage, blizzard, heat, flood) the Village will set up emergency
shelters in various locations as needed. During these times,
emergency shelter information may be obtained by calling
the non-emergency dispatch number at 579-2334.
Gas Leaks
If you smell natural gas inside your home, first evacuate
- but do not turn off any electrical devices - and call
NiCor - then call 9-1-1.
For outside leaks, call NiCor, then 9-1-1.
Power Lines (Electric Lines)
If you see a power line which has fallen do
not attempt to approach it - lines which appear to
be dead can suddenly become live. Call 9-1-1 and report
the location, then keep everyone away until police and fire
units arrive. Also, never stare at
arcing (flashing) power lines - the brilliant light
can cause permanent damage to your eyes!
If you observe a power line which is still up, but is burning
or sparking because of contact with trees, call Commonwealth
Edison first, then report it to 9-1-1.
Power Outages
If you lose power, first call Commonwealth Edison, then
report the outage to our dispatch center using the non-emergency
number - 579-2334.
Warning Sirens
The Village has two warning sirens, one located behind the
Village Hall, the other at Waiola Park. These will be activated
if the Village is threatened by a tornado. These sirens
are tested on Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m., unless threatening
weather is in the area. If the sirens are activated during
severe weather, take shelter immediately
in a basement or small room (closet, bathroom) near the
center of the lowest floor. Do not
call 9-1-1 except to report a tornado, storm damage or other
emergency.
For information on tornado safety, go to the National Weather
Service information web site.
