Notifying Citizens in an Emergency

What if an emergency situation arose in La Grange and all or portions of the Village were affected? How can people be notified? The Village has emergency notification tools available that are capable of placing thousands of telephone calls.  A pre-recorded voice or text message will be delivered telling residents and businesses about the situation and what actions, if any, should be taken.

On May 1, 2020, the Lyons Township Area Communications Center (LTACC) and its member communities, will be migrating from the current system called Code Red, to the Rave Alert / Smart 911 emergency notification system.  The Village strongly encourages residents to register for Rave Alert / Smart 911 beginning now through May 1.

The program greatly improves the efficiency and effectiveness of the emergency alert system.  One sign up includes both programs and there is no cost to residents, businesses or business employees.

Smart911 is a new safety feature that is available in addition to Rave Alert.  Smart911 allows individuals to create a Safety Profile at www.smart911.com, at no cost, that includes information they want 9-1-1 and response teams to have in the event of an emergency.  When a person makes an emergency call, their Safety Profile is automatically displayed to the 9-1-1 call taker’s screen, saving critical seconds in response to an emergency.  When coupled with Rave Alert, residents can receive notifications on potentially hazardous situations involving weather, traffic and other emergencies.

How Rave Alert Works

When a situation arises in La Grange, Village staff will use the Rave Alert mapping tools to designate a call area based on addresses.  Official, real time alerts will be sent to the public with information about emergencies affecting either the entire community, or specific areas.

This message can also include instructions requiring action on the part of the recipient.  Some emergencies or disasters that might call for action include:

  • Boiling contaminated water
  • Evacuation
  • Sheltering in place

Once the situation is remedied, notifications can be sent to the area signaling that the issue has been addressed and that normal activities can be resumed.

Rave Alert is a geographical-based system where street addresses are needed to select the telephone numbers that receive emergency notifications.  You can add or change your information on the Rave Alert registration website.


Do not automatically assume your telephone number is included. You should register if you:

  • Changed your home or cellular phone number or address within the last year
  • Have an unlisted phone number
  • Use a cellular phone as your home phone 

All businesses should also register.
