Informational Workshop - July 14, 2014
On Monday, July 14, the Village conducted an informational workshop concerning the Village's sewer system.
The purpose of the workshop was to provide an opportunity for both the Village and residents to address flooding concerns as a result of the two severe rain events which we experienced in June.
A presentation was provided to residents which explained how the Village's sewer system operates, how flooding can be reduced and steps the Village is taking to address flooding.
The Village is focusing on three primary areas to address flooding concerns which include operational issues and long-range planning.
Current action items include an assessment of the condition of the Village's primary sewer trunk lines (Cossitt and Hillgrove) and estimates of cost for any repairs. Depressions, where water may be restricted, will also be identified and restrictors will be evaluated for removal. The Village will also meet with other regional stakeholders such as the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD) and Cook County.
Operationally, the Village continues to meet with residents to discuss sewer systems and flood control devices, check for block/surcharged sewers, and clean catch basins as required.
In the short term (next 12 months), the Village will repair any blockages, continue to televise and clean sewers, and consider an ordinance prohibiting downspouts and sump pump connections to the sewer systems.
Finally, the Village will continue to implement its long term master sewer system plan which includes sewer lining and relief sewer installation. The evaluation and potential re-prioritization of budget priorities to advance sewer system improvements will be considered by the Village Board during the upcoming budget cycle. Regional projects that may potentially impact drainage in the Village will also continue to be evaluated.
