Blackstone Avenue from Cossitt Avenue to 47th Street, and Ashland Avenue from Harris Avenue to 47th Street were identified as street segments in need of repair as part of the 2016 Street Condition Survey. The existing sewer and water mains on these roadway segments were also evaluated as the repair and/or replacement of underground utilities is considered and coordinated with roadway rehabilitation programs to gain economies of scale and limit disruption to residents when possible.
Since the water mains were installed in 1900 and 1920, they were recommended for replacement. The water main project consists of replacing the 4” water main on Blackstone Avenue from Cossitt Avenue to 47th Street and the 4” water main on Ashland Avenue from Harris Avenue to 47th Street. Replacement of the water main is planned to be completed in advance of the roadway resurfacing of Blackstone and Ashland Avenues that is scheduled to occur this summer. The work will be completed by open cut and horizontal directional drilling methods.
